Sports Vision Training

In May 2007, it was announced that a dedicated vision training center will be set up in Beijing this summer to train all Chinese athletes taking part in next year’s Olympic Games. “I believe vision training is going to break wide open,” says Coach Al Wile, assistant director of the US Air Force Academy’s Human Performance Lab based in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Specialty sports vision training is helping athletes train skills that many believed were “untrainable”; skills like anticipation, field vision, timing, sport intelligence, game tempo, reaction speed, focus and concentration.

Each sport has different vision skills. In some sports, picking up a fast moving object faster will give an athlete an edge. Vision is both learned and developed skill. The eye can be trained just like any other muscle in the body to improve reaction to what they see. Through training exercises, you can teach your eyes to focus, locate and center properly to reduce fatigue.

Visual Sport Skills

Acuity - defined as the sharpness of a visual image. Static acuity refers to the ability to see while stationary (as in golf). Dynamic acuity refers to the ability to see while the athlete, or the perceived object, is moving. Tracking ability (i.e. 'locating' a fly ball) and reaction time (i.e. committing to swinging at a pitch) are both aided by good acuity.

Accommodation - defined as the ability to change focus rapidly from one point to another. This is crucial in 'quick' sports such as basketball, in which the athlete must be able to focus on the ball, teammates, opponents and the basket at the same time.

Central Field Awareness - defined as the ability see what is directly in front. This can also be likened to 'fixation' - a tennis player, for example, will shift focus from near to far within the central field and concurrently be able to fixate on the ball and subsequently, where they hit the ball.

Eye Tracking - defined as the ability to follow the path of the moving object. While tracking particularly fast objects (such as tennis serves and baseball pitches) the eye goes through an involuntary, jerky movement known as saccades.

Eye-Hand-Foot Coordination - defined as the ability of the visual system to guide the motor system efficiently.

Jiu-Jitsu and the martial arts are our family's legacy. Our father learned Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Boxing while serving in the Air Force during and after WWII. He trained with instructors from Japan, Guam, Philippines, and the US. At this time the Air Force was still a division of the Army. He increased his knowledge while stationed in the south pacific, mainly on Guam. We learned Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, and Boxing from a young age, and we continue to carry on our family's legacy. There are three brothers currently teaching martial arts and all three are ranked and certified as master instructors. Edward, Ronald, and James have studied martial arts for most of their lives and continue to spread their knowledge. HILL BROTHERS JIU-JITSU and VALE TUDO was formed by Ron and James Hill in 2007. We continue to research all Jiu-Jitsu and fighting systems in order to make our systems stronger.
