Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of program do you use?

The purpose of our strength program is to provide a safe, supervised environment for athletes to train in order to improve their overall athletic performance. My program will continually change throughout the year depending on the sports seasons, and will concentrate on core lifts (lifts that will be tracked during each cycle, such as squat, power-clean, dead lift, bench, etc.) and other functional exercises that are used to improve strength/power.

Are they safe?

Athletes are taught to spot each other during lifts where safety is a concern and each lift is supervised during training sessions.

Should belts or supportive gear be used?

Supplementary gear is rarely needed and generally discouraged due to the “crutch effect.” However, limited use is allowed for experienced, qualified individuals. At specific times, belts can and will be used, but only during maximum efforts and after a strength base has been established. Belts can sometimes be used too often and can actually comprise core/trunk strength (“crutch effect”).

What are the age levels?

10 years and older (additional small group General Physical Preparation or GPP training options may be available based upon interest and at the discretion/evaluation of JaDae McGuire).

When will we see results?

Results will be ongoing. Strength training, just like any sport, takes effort, commitment and, most importantly, consistency. Generally, athletes will be pre- and post-tested with each cycle entered and will be given feedback throughout the cycle.

How do you measure progress?

As stated above, athletes will generally be pre-and post-tested during each cycle. Usually the only exception occurring will be for those athletes that need to learn the lifts before testing for safety purposes. Testing will generally be done on predetermined lifts upon entering a particular cycle. Lifts will change frequently but some consistency is obviously needed for improvement to occur.

Can I train on additional days or get private instruction on lifts?

Yes, additional sessions and/or private instruction will be available by appointment. However, adding these sessions will be at my discretion/evaluation based up each athlete's current training volume with lifting and sport.

What about attendance?

Seasonal programs are scheduled to accommodate holiday, in school, and out of school schedules, which makes attendance easier and more likely. It is the responsibility of each athlete to attend scheduled sessions. I will be tracking attendance every session and athletes that have an excess of unexcused absences may not be welcome back to the strength program the following term or year. There will be no refunds or make-ups due to missed scheduled session.
